Introduction to the medic skill set

Surviving is not all about strength, but most importantly about what you know, which is why developing your skills is essential to your survival. One of these essential skills is medicine, which is what we are going to have a look at now.

There are three medic levels that you need to complete studying before becoming a fully qualified medic. Each level consists of reading 3 books and some practical tasks suck as researching associated items. Each book and its associated practical research tasks will allow you to do new things such as craft bandages, recognize unknown pills, get better results when healing yourself and others etc... right away until you eventually become a fully qualified medic.

There are also 3 associated research quests for the medic skill set which will allow you to craft your own antidotes against the zombie virus, Dr. Ivan’s virus and to craft pills which are more effective than the regular pills that you find lying around. Crafting antidotes will allow you to cure yourself when you contract an illness and thus prevent you from eventually dyeing. We will talk about the research quests and crafting antidotes and pills later on. You can learn about the various illnesses that you can contract in game by clicking here.

So let’s take a look at tracking your skills progress and how to get started first…

Tracking your progress

You can track the progress you are making in developing your medic and other skills as well as the associated research practical tasks for each skill set by pressing the F1 button

on your keyboard at any time in game.

Let's call this the skill tracker and let’s focus on the tile labelled Medic. The six icons underneath the big cross icon display the progress that you are making in studying each book, and the related items to it. Each item also has a progress bar on the right hand side which gradually grows taller as you gain more progress in using/reading it. Eventually the progress bar will turn in to a green check mark which means that you have completely finished studying that item or reading that book. Once you have finished studying each book the empty boxes will fill up with items that you need to gain practical usage skills with to finish studying that book. The ‘research’ button allows you to keep track of your research progress, something that we will talk about later on.

The ‘help’ button in the top right corner of the tile allows you to see which books you need to find and study as you progress in developing your medic skills. So let’s click the ‘help’ button to get started.

    Note
Also note that each book has a small number e.g. 1.1 in the bottom left corner which allows you to quickly see which level and book series you are currently reading. The first number stands for the level and the second number for the book series. Each level consists of 3 books, so in our 1.1 example this book would be used to study the 1st level and would be the first series. After studying it you can proceed to study 1.2 and then 1.3. Note that you cannot jump from 1.1 to 1.3 for example; all books must be read in sequential order.

Getting started…

The help file says that in order to get started in developing your medical skills you need to find a book called ‘1.1 Student Medic Work’. You can find this book and all the others you will need lying around in various buildings throughout the island. You can also find books lying around in stacks of books. If you come across such a stack, put it in your inventory, right-click on it and select 'skim through book'. After that the stack will disappear and some kind of book will appears in its place.

Begin reading a book by placing it in to your inventory, then right-clicking on it and selecting ‘read book’.

If you press F1 in game now you will see that a book labelled 1.1 in the bottom right corner has been added to one of the 6 squares in the medic tile. There is a progress bar on the right hand side of the book showing you how much progress you have made in reading it. Once you finish reading it, the progress bar will turn in to a green check mark as previously mentioned.

Once you finish reading the book two icons of the skills that you need to practice will appear beside the book. In this case a cloth and some painkillers. Let’s have a look at these new icons more closely…

    Note
Your progress in reading books and gained practical experience with items is not lost when you die.

The help file also says that after reading the 1.1 book, you will be able to craft bandages after gaining practical experience in bandaging others with cloths. This explains the cloth icon that appeared in the skill tracker beside the book. It also has a progress bar. The more you bandage yourself and others using cloths the more experience you will gain and the more the progress bar will grow until it also turns in to a green check mark meaning you have gained enough experience with it and are now able to craft bandages.

The help file also says that you need to practice using painkillers after which you will be able to identify unknown pills

that you find with a 25% success rate. Use painkillers on yourself and on others until you gain enough experience with them that a green check mark also appears in the corner. After you have finished reading the 1.1 book, gained full experience with using cloths and painkillers you are ready to proceed to read the ‘1.2 Student Essay Work’ book.

Moving on to the next book

If we open the help file again we see that to proceed to read the next book we need to find a book called ‘1.2 Student Essay Work’. After you begin reading it the previous 1.1 book icon in the skill tracker will turn to a 1.2 book icon. Once you finish reading it, a green check mark will once again appear in the corner and an icon of morphine will appear in one of the remaining empty squares.

The help file also says that after gaining practical experience in using the regular morphine that you can find lying around you will be able craft level 1 morphine which is more effective than the standard morphine. This explains the morphine icon that appear after you finished reading the 1.2 book. Use morphine on yourself or others to gain experience until you complete researching it, after which you will be able to move on to the 1.3 book and so forth…
