Introduction to illnesses
As you try to survive you may contract an illness, either from getting too cold while out in the open, bandaging yourself using something that hasn't been disinfected, performing a blood transfusion in a location that is not sterile, by being hit by a zombie or contracting an illness from other players.
You may not become aware that you have fallen ill straight away, usually it takes a while for all the symptoms to fully show and effect you, but you may begin to notice your player coughing or moaning in pain which are the first telltale signs that you have contracted some kind of illness. Lets have a look at the types of illnesses in the game, their symptoms and how to cure them.
Diagnosing what illness you have
Learning the symptoms of each illness will allow you to make a basic diagnosis and cure yourself quickly, however the best way to reliably tell if you have contracted any illnesses and which ones is to use a single use tester or multi use tester. (Note that the multi use tester can only be used by level 3 medics). See the medic skill set on how to become a level 3 medic.

Infection of the blood
Symptoms
Blood infections are very common and easy to contract if you do not use adequate protection and antiseptics when treating wounds or performing blood transfusions.
The symptoms of a blood infection are:
- Greying of the screen / bad visibility (Early Stages)
- Loosing consciousness randomly (Intermediate Stage)
- Dehydration(Intermediate Stage)
- Loss of blood and eventual death (Advanced Stage)
Curing this illness
The only way you can cure infections of the blood is by crafting blood bags with antibiotics
and using them to give yourself or others infected a blood transfusion, or using ones that other players have crafted if you cannot craft your own yet. Click here to learn how to perform a blood transfusion.

Food poisoning
Symptoms
Food poisoning is also very common, especially if you consume opened tin cans and unboiled water. Food poisoning is easy to cure however if left untreated it can become life threatening.
The symptoms of a food poisoning are:
- Stomach growling sounds
- Dehydration
Curing this illness
You can cure food poisoning easily by consuming some activated charcoal tablets
which can be found lying around in the game world.
How to avoid contracting this illness
- Always make sure to boil water before you drink it.
- Avoid eating opened tin cans and food prone to going bad quickly unless you have to.
- Avoid eating raw meat.
Common Cold
Symptoms
The common cold is also a very common infection that you may contract while trying to survive. You will mostly contract it if your body temperature is low for a long time. This infection is different than the others because you can also contract it by standing close to other players which are suffering from it.
The symptoms of the common cold are:
- Loud cough
Curing this illness
The common cold is easy to cure. You can cure it by consuming antibiotics
which you can find lying around, and you can also craft stronger ones after completing the 'Magic Pill' research quest in the medic skill set.
How to avoid contracting this illness
- Do not let your body temperature to fall by avoiding standing still for long times or being present in cold areas such as at sea or in the mountains for long periods of time.
- Dress warm with winter clothes when in cold areas.
- Avoid standing close to other players that you can hear coughing.
- Make sure you always have a face mask in your inventory when standing close to other players and when traveling together in vehicles.
Zombie Virus
Symptoms
As you may already know, zombies were people who contracted the zombie virus, died and turned in to zombies that now roam the land, meaning they still have the zombie virus inside them. You can contract the zombie virus when you cut zombies or take blood samples from them or when they hit you and tear your skin. After contracting the zombie virus you will eventually die and turn in to a zombie yourself if left untreated. The only way to cure the zombie virus is to consume the antidote
which you can craft by completing the zombie virus research quest in the medic skill set or obtain from other players that have crafted it.
The symptoms of the zombie virus are:
- Hallucinations
- Poor vision / Greying of the screen
Curing this illness
You can cure the zombie virus by consuming the zombie virus antidote
which you can craft by completing the zombie virus research quest in the medic skill set or obtain it from other players that have already crafted it.
How to avoid contracting this illness
- Avoid cutting zombies unless you need to.
- Avoid standing close to other players that you can hear coughing.
- Make sure you always have a face mask Error creating thumbnail: File missingin your inventory when standing close to other players and when traveling together in vehicles.
Dr. Ivan's Virus
Symptoms
Dr. Ivan's virus is a very rare virus which you can contract by being hit by Dr. Ivan, cutting his body or taking a blood sample from his body. Dr. Ivan's virus is very hard to cure as it can only be cured by consuming the antidote to it
. The location of that antidote was only known to Dr. Ivan and asking him for it if you happen to see him now is probably not a good idea.
The symptoms of Dr. Ivan's virus are:
- Hallucinations
- Poor vision / Greying of the screen
- Loss of energy
Curing this illness
- Find the antidote to Dr. Ivan's virus Error creating thumbnail: File missing. Location unknown.
How to avoid contracting this illness
- Avoid being hit by Dr. Ivan.
- Avoid cutting and taking samples from Dr. Ivan's body unless you need to.
